ABOUT US The Latino Leadership Project consists of recent college alumni, college students and high school students who have strong beliefs about social responsibility to the community and also about the value of a higher education. The initial LLP core group of students worked intensely in the realization of the first Verano Para Líderes (VPL) (Summer for Leaders) program, which was held in the summer of 1998. The consequent success of the program positively affected our expectations and attitudes for future programs. We share this positive outlook with high school and college students, faculty, and also with members of the surrounding community. It is unique to see a group of students so driven as the members of the LLP have been. In its first two and a half years of existence, the group of students that form the LLP has received generous help in the form of grants and in-kind contributions for the realization of three LLP programs. The three LLP programs are:
While membership in the LLP continues to be comprised mainly of recent college alumni, college students and high school students, we now have a Board Of Directors, one full-time executive director leading the LLP and we now have official 501(c)3 (non-profit organization) status. The LLP has accomplished a lot in these past two and a half years. Our drive and our professionalism, combined with the community support we have received, makes us confident that soon the LLP will be an instrumental intermediary between higher education and young Latino students throughout the Midwest. It is in this way that we will work to raise and unite the relatively young Latino community of the Midwest, and also to curb the plague of stereotypes that will inevitably follow the rapid growth of the Midwest's Latino population. 2507 University Avenue c/o Student Life Center DRAKE UNIVERSITY Des Moines IA, 50311
